Academics

Founded in 1973, Community School is an independent college preparatory day and boarding school. We offer a rigorous and innovative curriculum complemented by a distinctive Outdoor Program, outstanding college counseling, robust athletic opportunities, a comprehensive arts curriculum, and an active community service program.
Our students thrive on close and caring relationships with faculty and peers in a nurturing environment centered on small classes. Students are encouraged to take risks and develop their passions, both in and outside of the classroom. Supported by an outstanding college counseling program and strong academic and SAT preparation, our graduates attend and succeed at the nation’s finest colleges and universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Dartmouth, and Middlebury. Our school motto, “from here… anywhere,” captures the adventurous and expansive world-view of our talented students who go on to lead meaningful and purposeful lives.
Academic requirements and standards are the same for both SVSA students and Community School
students. The school's term system, electives, Academic FlexPlan program (see below), summer school offerings, technology, and academic support system ensure that the additional educational needs of SVSA student-athletes are accommodated. Teachers work with SVSA athletes to plan for competition-related absences, and academic support is available while students are traveling. As students progress through the Upper School, they are offered greater flexibility and opportunity to build their daily schedules to maximize training time without sacrificing academic quality or progress. For more information on academic planning, please download our Upper School Curriculum Guide.
