The Community School academic campus is situated in a truly idyllic spot, hugging the banks of Trail Creek and looking out over Bald Mountain. Our classroom buildings, theater, and gymnasium vibrate all day, every day, with the energy, ideas and enthusiasm of students from the littlest Cutthroats in the Early Childhood Center, to our seniors, poised for college and … anywhere.
The Residence Hall, located just steps from Bald Mountain’s Warm Springs Lift and Lodge, is truly a home away from home. Dorm life is defined by dorm-wise dinners, structured study periods, the ability to train where you live, and down time to bond and relax with housemates. This dorm, with its comfortable rooms and proximity to the hill, puts most others to shame.
Dollar Mountain, located just up the hill from Community School’s main campus, is a winter playground to beat all winter playgrounds. Boasting the only Olympic-size 22-foot Superpipe in the Northwest and an ever-evolving terrain park filled with challenging and fun boxes, jumps, rollers, and rails, this backyard training facility is unbeatable for SVSA skiers and snowboarders.
Bald Mountain has helped secure Sun Valley’s standing as America’s premiere winter destination resort for nearly 80 years. With its consistently steep pitch, variety of terrain, legendary snowmaking, laudable grooming, and gorgeous bluebird days, the mountain is known for its speed and beauty. While most ski racers get to enjoy Baldy only once a season, or even once in a lifetime, SVSA skiers and snowboarders have Baldy at their tips every single day.
The Sun Valley Ski Education Engl Training Center reinvents and redefines the traditional mountain base facility for alpine athletes. Newly renovated and re-imagined for Winter 2013-2014, this state-of-the-art training center offers athletes everything they need to stay in top condition. A bonus for SVSA boarding athletes? The Engl Training Center is steps away from the Residence Hall.
Every freestyle skier and snowboarder lives for air. SVSA athletes can learn how to get as far off the snow as possible and land safely by using the Air Barn. This year-round facility offers two Olympic-size trampolines, foam pits, skateboard ramps, a skateboard half-pipe, weight training and cardio equipment, three Skier’s Edge machines and six Fitwalls. The convenient location allows an athlete to practice a trick at the Air Barn after school and take it to the slopes of Dollar well before the lifts close.
For our cross country athletes, the Lake Creek Training Center is the best home base imaginable. Tucked in the woods at the beginning of miles and miles of groomed trails, the Training Center offers everything from a place to change clothes, to a place to wax skis and acts as a headquarters for planning the day’s workout with the program’s dedicated coaches. The Lake Creek Training Center is located a short drive from both Community School campus and the Residence Hall. This facility, as well as the area’s over 130km of cross country trails, led to Sun Valley’s designation as the nation’s only U.S. Nordic Olympic Training Site.
The Sagewillow fields in Sun Valley’s Elkhorn neighborhood are at the apex of the action during the busy fall soccer and cross country running seasons. Two picturesque fields host Middle and Upper School boys’ and girls’ soccer games, as well as cross-country running events. The fields are located a short drive from campus.
In order to make strength training and conditioning even more accessible and productive for our downhill athletes, Ketchum’s High Altitude Fitness gym invites student athletes to train with some of town’s most serious skiers, snowboarders, cross country skiers, and other fitness buffs. Memberships for SVSA athletes add another dimension to the training regimen.
